Ms. Marvel Is Going Through Some Changes

In case you didn’t hear, Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, is dead. Marvel decided to kill off the beloved character, even though she was in an extremely delightful Disney+ show and will be appearing in the upcoming Marvel Studios film, The Marvels.

How did she die? It wasn’t even in her own comic. She died in an issue of The Amazing Spider-Man. It was a “heroic” death. (Spoiler: She died saving Mary Jane). It just felt like it came out of nowhere, even with the tiny bits of build up attempted. My view on “comic book deaths” is no secret.

While we did get a touching tribute issue in last week’s Fallen Friend: The Death of Ms. Marvel, it’s still pointless to kill off popular characters.

Why? The deaths never stick…thank goodness.

It’s also been announced, already, that Kamala is coming back…and she’s joining the X-Men.

Marvel announced last week there would be a four-issue miniseries, Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant. Iman Villani (who plays the live action version of Kamala) will be co-writing the series with Sabir Pirzada. The art will be by Carlos Gomez and Adam Gorham.

It may seem odd, at first, that Kamala is now suddenly a mutant. Being a mutant allows for their mutant resurrection process, seen in recent X-Men issues. This is likely how she’ll be returning to us.

While Kamala’s origin, in the comics, placed her as an Inhuman, the TV series did end with the revelation that there was some sort of “mutation” in her genetic make up. Making her officially a mutant really isn’t too far of a stretch (no pun intended).

During the original announcement, it was stated that this [new] mutant angle will not retcon her Inhuman roots. There’s no reason she can’t be an Inhuman and a mutant, right?

The first issue goes on sale August 30. Since it’s a first issue, we can expect a lot of different variant covers. Marvel will be releasing more covers. These were revealed via the Marvel Twitter account:

It’s hard to say how this will go. The obvious main plus is we’re getting Kamala back. We won’t have to wait pointless months wondering when Marvel would be resurrecting her. Being an X-Men and mutant will allow more “opportunities” in terms of appearances and storylines. It also means she’ll be getting pulled into all the mutant drama the X-Men can’t ever seem to escape.

Just give me great stories with good art, and I’ll be happy.

Keep an eye out for the other covers. Let your local comic shop know if you’re interested in purchasing any of them.
