Gwen Stacy Resurrected In New Gwenpool Comic

What?

No, that’s not a typo. First off, let’s be clear- – GWENPOOL AND GWEN STACY ARE NOT THE SAME CHARACTER.

Gwen Stacy has one of the most tragic deaths in comics. We have seen her “return” before only to, thankfully, have it reveal it wasn’t really her. The closet we’ve had to her actually coming back is Spider-Gwen, but she’s from a different universe so it doesn’t really count.

Marvel has announced that Gwen Stacy is returning. If you’re feeling a little uneasy about that, that might be the point. Marvel has stated Gwen is coming back as a “coldblooded killer” this May in a new Gwenpool series.

To help Spider-Man make sense of this, Gwendolyn Poole, the original Gwenpool, will team up with him. We’ll also see appearances by Kate Bishop and Jeff the Land Shark.

Who, besides Marvel, is responsible for this madness?

The five-issue series will be written by Cavan Scott (Star Wars: The High Republic) with art by Stefano Nesi. This is Nesi’s Marvel Comics debut having recently worked on Batman at that other publisher.

This is what Scott had to say:

What an absolute honor! To tear both Gwenpool AND Spider-Man’s worlds apart? Yes please! Gwen Stacy is back from the grave and deadlier than ever. Weapon-X style abilities? Check. A line in killer put-downs? You’ve got it. This is NOT the Gwen you remember. But just who is behind her miraculous resurrection? And what has happened to the original Gwenpool’s usually careful existence? Add Kate Bishop and Jeff the Land Shark to the mix and you have the Marvel series of my dreams!

I couldn’t ask for a better partner than Stefano Nesi on art! Mega-violence has never been so much fun, each frenzied attack brought to dark, brooding life by Matt Milla’s blistering colors. Monsters, mayhem and murder await as Spider-Man and Kate learn that nothing—or no one—is sacred!

Hmm.

I think we can all agree this sounds like a crazy idea. There are certain characters who should not be resurrected. Sure, in comics, no one really stays dead. Not only is Marvel “bringing back” the beloved Gwen Stacy, but they’re making her a killer? It’s clear there has to be something more to this.

Also, Cavan Scott is a great writer. Next to Moon Knight, Gwenpool is actually my favorite Marvel character. There’s kind of a lot riding on this for me, as a fan. I trust that Scott has something brilliant figured out. The inclusion and connection to Kate Bishop and Jeff the Land Shark is promising.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering who Gwenpool is, here are:

We’ll have to wait until May 14 to find out what exactly is going on. I think we’ll all have our fingers crossed until then that Gwen Stacy and Gwenpool will be treated fairly.

What are your thoughts on the return of Gwen and Gwen?
