Bucky Barnes is coming back.
Where has he been lately? He’s been pretty busy. During the events of Original Sin, he became the “Man on the Wall” and had some crazy space adventures. He returned to Earth as Pleasant Hill created a mess for heroes and villains. Then he led the Thunderbolts for a bit until Secret Empire turned the world upside-down.
Today, Marvel has announced a new limited series coming in December.
The series will be written by Kyle Higgins (Power Rangers, C.O.W.L.) with art by Rod Reis (Secret Empire, Doctor Strange: Damnation, C.O.W.L.). The two reunite to tell this next chapter in Bucky’s life.
Higgins made the following statement:
‘As someone with quite a bit of experience writing grown up sidekicks, I know firsthand how important it is to define the character outside of their relationship with their mentor. Since being freed from Soviet brainwashing, Bucky has done a massive amount of work to atone for his sins–becoming Captain America, spending time in the Gulag, dying to save the world… in many ways, he’s found redemption. So, what’s next for him? He’s going to help other people do the same.’
Reis also had this to add:
‘To be able to work with a character that has such a rich legacy and striking visual identity is really exciting. Taking Bucky forward and building a world unique to him – one that still respects his past – is an artist’s dream. I can’t wait for people to see what we’ve come up with.’
Besides working together on C.O.W.L., Higgins recently wrapped up The Dead Hand at Image, which dealt with threats from the Cold War era. Along with his love of the character and admiration for Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting’s Winter Soldier run, he’s a great choice to take on this series. And Reis’ art always blows me away. You won’t want to miss this one.
Winter Soldier #1 is on sale December 5, 2018. Let your local comic shop know you want to reserve a copy.
This comic sounds really interesting! I’ve never read any of the comics surrounding Bucky, but I have seen all of the MCU Captain America films and Avengers: Infinity War. If Bucky becomes Captain America in Avengers 4, do you think the concept of Bucky helping others find redemption could be incorporated into future MCU films?
It would be nice to see them touch on redemption. I really want to see if Stark can forgive him (even though he was brainwashed and all that). As for comics, you should check out Captain America, Vol. 1: Winter Soldier Ultimate Collection by Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting, and others.
Thanks for the recommendation, Tony! I will definitely check that comic out as I wait for Avengers 4.
