There’s a crazy amount of comics released each week. Here’s a look at some of the strangest, coolest, and funniest things you might have missed in last week’s comics. These examples should give you more of a reason to pick up these titles at your local comic shop. You can also find more current and past examples on the Best Stuff Instagram page.
There may be some minor spoilers below.
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #37
Best Reason Superheroes Should Have Black Costumes
Comic book characters die–a lot. They’re constantly getting killed or sacrificing themselves in the fight against evil. The current issue of Squirrel Girl starts out with the funeral of Squirrel Girl. She was actually killed off panel, in between issues.
As the heroes enter the funeral home, Captain America comments on breaking out their black variant costumes. Black Widow points out wearing black all the time makes life easier.
Titans #27
Best Reason Superheroes Shouldn’t Mourn For Their Teammates
Things are pretty bleak in the DC Universe. When the Titans hear about Nightwing getting shot in the head, Donna Troy points out they shouldn’t have to worry. They all go through horrible things, including death, and manage to come back smelling like roses.
X-Men Black: Mojo #1
Grossest Variation of the Fastball Special
X-23 decides she and Rockslide should perform the Fastball Special move. A mutant called Mukus stops them so he can upgrade the attack by transforming it into a Spitball Special.
As Laura points out, it’s pretty gross.
Red Hood: Outlaw #27
Best Hug This Week
Things are pretty dicey between Batman and Red Hood. The fact that Jason shot Penguin in the face hasn’t helped their tense relationship. Bruce manages to track down Jason since he is the World’s Greatest Detective. He wasn’t looking for him to drag him back to Gotham. He wanted to tell Jason in person that his best friend, Roy Harper, has been killed.
They share a nice moment, and Batman even points out that he could never hate Jason despite the things he does.
Infinity Wars #4
Best Indication It’s Time TO Clean Out The Refrigerator
After being merged with Emma Frost, Wolverine decides to grab a beer from the fridge before they head off. He is instantly attacked by a creature that “killed” his beer. This could mean it’s time to throw out any mutated leftovers inside. Or maybe it was Loki causing a distraction because they didn’t want Logan to accompany them.
Best Look At The Formation Of A Team
Some heroes and villains are forming a team to try to defeat Requiem and the Infinity Stones. You have to admire the way Mike Deodato depicts the different characters and their height differences along with Frank Martin’s colors.
Superman #4
Best Reason You Should Avoid Anger Or Violence As An Answer
Superman is showing he is super at everything, including being a super-dad. He has a nice conversation with his son about trying to make the world a better place rather than try to punch away problems.
Exiles #9
Best Reason To Always Go To The Bathroom Before Dimension Hopping
Wolvie and T’Challa (from different dimensions) are trying to find their companions. As they travel between worlds, Wolvie points out how the sensation can make you feel like you need to pee-pee. Sounds like it’s a good idea to go to the bathroom before traveling.
Scooby Apocalypse #30
Best Side Effect From Getting Zapped By Electricity
In this zombie apocalyptic world, Scooby-Doo was a dog that was modified in a lab. He accidentally gets electrocuted and his intelligence is given a boost. The question is–how long will this last?
Amazing Spider-Man #7
Best Upgraded Boomerang
One of Peter Parker’s roommates is the villain Boomerang. He claims to have reformed and takes Peter to the Bar With No Name after discovering he “worked” with Spier-Man because it was Spider-Man trivia night. Kingpin convinces the other villains to break the bar’s rules against violence in order to take down Boomerang. Boomerang uses a new Bomberang to help make a getaway.
Iceman #2
Most Interesting Look At Emma Frost
Emma Frost needs Iceman’s help. Kitty Pryde is immediately against Emma being at the mansion. Bobby shows Emma can be trusted by making a psychic image of Emma in an unflattering outfit. Because Emma allows this image to be displayed, it shows how serious she is about needing Bobby’s help. The t-shirt was a nice touch.
Cursed Comics Cavalcade #1
Best Thing To Do After Putting Out A Fire And Traveling To Jupiter
What’s the best thing to do after saving countless lives all over the planet? Bacon. Bacon just might be the answer to everything.
Venom #7
Best Piece Of Venom Information We Didn’t Really Need
Why is Venom constantly drooling green stuff from his mouth? Reed Richards, from the Ultimate Universe, tells Eddie Brock what it really is. It’s pretty gross. It makes perfect sense but still is gross. We’ll never look at Venom the same way again.
Hawkman #5
Best New Time Travel Theory
Whenever time travel comes up, things can get confusing very very quickly. Ray Palmer is trying to figure out why and how Hawkman is traveling around and visiting his past lives. He mentions the River Theory about time travel.
What If? Punisher
Best Spider-Man Homage This Week
In the latest What If? comic, Spider-Man becomes a little more like the Punisher. The spider that bit him even had a skull-shape design on its back. At one point, Peter decides to give up being Spider-Man, just like in the classic Amazing Spider-Man #50.
That’s it for this week. Be sure to pick up these comics at your local comic shop, if you haven’t already if any of these moments strikes your fancy.
