“Where does he get those wonderful toys?”
This is a question long asked by villains in Gotham. It’s likely something asked by the police force and even regular citizens. Batman has always had the luxury of utilizing different Bat-gadgets along with several different costumes. This has all been possible due to the vast Wayne fortune that’s always been at his disposal.
After the events of Joker War, Bruce Wayne has found himself with a lot less money. (Read the story arc for the full details). Less money means Batman has to be a little more selective in what he uses. He’s had to rely more on his skills rather than toys and gadgets. He even moved out of Wayne Manor and into a brownstone in the city in order to be closer to the action.
Because it’d be boring if Batman didn’t face numerous obstacles in his crusade against crime, he’s had an extremely tough time in the pages of Detective Comics, written by Mariko Tamaki. With another heavy blow and the destruction of his “micro-cave,” Batman has no choice but to access an old stash by the docks in order to suit up and continue the fight.
The result is glorious:
Batman has returned to the classic gray and blue suit. Seeing it once again, you realize just how much it’s been missed. It always made sense when it was revealed the suit was heavily reinforced with kevlar beneath the Bat-emblem. This gave the cowardly street thugs a target to shoot at, instead of them trying to go for a headshot.
It’s not exactly clear whether or not he’ll keep this retro look. The upcoming covers for Detective Comics show his previous current costume. It’s possible the covers were done that way to avoid “spoilers” since they are released three months in advanced. Either way, it was a treat to see Dan Mora and Jordie Bellaire bring the suit back in a nice big image. We’ll have to wait and see if Batman is able to locate a “newer” suit next month.
What are your thoughts on the classic look? Should it stay or should it go back in storage?
