Perhaps those “darkest days” will be getting brighter this August.
At San Diego Comic-Con, the new trailer for Lanterns was unveiled. The show revolves around John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre) and veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler). They are “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery with cosmic ties as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
During the panel, Kyle Chandler referenced old black and white films he’d watch as a kid. They “allowed the magical to happen because it wasn’t as we know the world.” He said working on Lanterns was like the same thing. The characters are based in reality but “there’s this supernatural wonderful world outside you could work off of.”
Aaron Pierre likes that his character isn’t one thing. He’s not two-dimensional. Along with the complexity, what he loves about John Stewart is how much he inspires.
Showrunner Chris Mundy also mentioned that Laura Linney will play a Guardian who “has a lot to say to John about the role of being Green Lantern.”
My fear is we’ll be seeing the death of Hal Jordan and John will step up to replace him. This was a heavy feeling after viewing the first teaser. The new trailer has Sinestro suggesting that John will actually be his replacement.
Also during the panel, seven clips were show that have not been released. One has Hal and John arguing in a car with Hal jumping out as the car drives off a cliff in order to get John to use the ring to save himself…and the car. There was also a scene with Hal interrogating a suspicious…human, a scene when John was on a mission in the military, Guy Gardner talking to John (who is a little…different in this scene – no spoilers), Hal getting into a barfight, Hal talking to Sinestro about the Manhunters, and Hal and John full on fighting each other.
Nathan Fillion also showed up during the panel. The three then gave the Lantern oath.
Lanterns premieres on HBO Max on Sunday, August 16 at 9:00 pm ET/PT. New episodes will drop weekly with the final episode airing on October 4. The season consists of eight episodes. While a second season hasn’t been officially confirmed, word is the writers’ room is already working on scripts
