There’s a crazy amount of comics released each week. Here’s a look at some of the strangest, coolest, and funniest things you might have missed in last week’s comics. These examples should give you more of a reason to pick up these titles at your local comic shop. You can also find more current and past examples on the Best Stuff Instagram page.
There may be some minor spoilers below.
Spider-Geddon #4
Best Revelation About Spider-Cop
If you’ve played the Spider-Man video game on the PlayStation 4, you’re familiar with Spidey’s inner monologue persona–Spider-Cop. As he would swing over to the next crime scene, he’d imagine a gruff cop with spider-powers taking on all the bad guys.
In Spider-Geddon, the video game version of Spider-Man discovers there is an alternate universe where Spider-Cop actually exists. Let’s hope someday we’ll get at least a one-shot.
Best Princess Bride Reference
In one of the realities, Norman Osborn became the Spider-person recruited to fight the Inheritors. Unfortunately, as you would expect, he’s a bit of a jerk. He finally decides to leave, and we see they have The Princess Bride in his dimension as well as he tells them to “have fun storming the castle.”
Batman #59
Best Reason Not To Contradict Batman
Batman is on a mission. He walks into Arkham Asylum determined to have words with Bane, who has been accused of being behind several recent events, including Nightwing getting shot in the head. Batman is meant by a platoon of guards. At first they tell him he can’t be there. They quickly realize the error of their ways.
West Coast Avengers #4
Best Reason To Trust A Giant Dragon
When B.R.O.D.O.K. (Bio-Robotic Organism Designed Overwhelmingly for Kissing) turned women who rejected him into giant beasts, one woman, who was turned into a dragon, decided she wanted to remain in this state. Kate Bishop is hesitant and asks if she’ll eat people or destroy stuff. The dragon replies she’s a vegetarian and also agrees to give Kate a lift on occasion.
Harley Quinn #54
Best Reason To Have Your Priorities Straight
Coney Island is being terrorized. Harley tells Petite Tina they need to protect the important things, like the hot dogs and donuts. Tina manages to correct Harley with what she obviously really meant.
Mr. And Mrs. X #5
Best Observation About A Kiss From A Newly Born Alien/Mutant Hybrid
Gambit and Rogue recently got married (finally!). Unfortunately their honeymoon was abruptly interrupted, and they got pulled into a fight with the Shi’ar. It appeared as if Rogue was obliterated, but it was really a quick last minute ruse and the happy couple kisses and makes up.
Injustice 2 Annual #2
Best Reason To Respect Your Elders
Martha Kent decides she wants to visit Superman, who has been locked up for trying to be an evil dictator. Jonathan stays outside and tells Batman to get into his truck so they could go out for a beer. Batman tries coming up with an excuse but Jonathan insists.
Best Homage To A Edward Hopper Painting
Lois Lane (in a flashback) is waiting to meet an informant. The scene looks like the painting Nighthawks by Edward Hopper.
Best Reason Lois Lane Kicks Butt
Lois is being watched over by Nightwing and Batwoman in case things get dangerous during her meeting. Her informant was followed and two thugs threaten Lois. She was to signal if she needed assistance, but clearly she didn’t. She easily takes the two brutes down before Nightwing and Batwoman arrive.
The Punisher #4
Best Use Of Lettering To Show Action
Every once in a while, artists get a creative with the panel layouts on a page. As Punisher fires a gun, the action is seen within the letters of the word “Blam.” It looks pretty dang cool.
Justice League Dark #5
Best Question About Animated Skeletons
The team is fighting in a magical realm. Man-Bat asks brings up a question I’ve often thought about–How do skeletons walk? They don’t have any muscles or tendons. I guess it just comes down to magic.
Archie #700
Best Surprise In Archie’s Bedroom
Summer break is over and the teens of Riverdale have returned home. Archie remained in town but seems to be avoided everyone when they try to find out what he’s been up to. As he sneaks into his bedroom, he discovers someone is already there waiting for him. It seems he and Sabrina the Teenage Witch have gotten together while their friends were away.
Teen Titans #4
Best Secret Wars Callback
The Teen Titans were trying to capture Lady Vic when they discovered they’d been lead to a trap. Lady Vic had been killed and the building was set to explode. The team managed to survive as Crush, Lobo’s daughter, held up the wreckage.
Whether intentional or not, it reminded me of Marvel’s Secret Wars #4, where Hulk held up a mountain over the heroes.
The building might not weigh one hundred and fifty billion tons, but it’s still impressive.
That’s it for this week. Be sure to pick up these comics at your local comic shop, if you haven’t already if any of these moments strikes your fancy.
